Driving with Motorcyclists - 10 Tips To Keep Safe
Sharing the Road with Motorcyclists: Ten Things You Must Know 1. Cars and trucks far outnumber motorcycles on the road so most drivers don't "recognize" one immediately. Motorcyclists on the road often get ignored, whether intentionally or not. Therefore as a car driver, be alert at all times especially when checking traffic at an intersection. 2. A motorcyclist may look father away than he actually is. Also because of its size, a motorcycle's speed may be hard to determine. Always assume a motorcyclist is closer than he looks when checking traffic. 3. A motorcyclist can be easily hidden in a car's blind spots or by objects outside a car (bushes, fences, bridges, etc). 4. Never try to share a lane with a motorcyclist while driving next him. 5. Motorcyclists occasionally slow by down shifting or by merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. When following behind a motorcyclist, allow 5-6 seconds following distance. Be prepared for a motorcyclist to slow without any visual warning. 6. Motorcycle turn signals usually don't cancel themselves out. Some motorcycle riders, especially beginners, forget to turn off the directional lights. Try to determine if the signal is really intended or not. 7. Motorcyclists can change lanes suddenly to be seen easier, avoid road debris, passing vehicles, or wind. Don't assume its reckless driving or trying to show off. 8. Maneuverability is one of the motorcycle's better features, especially at reduced speeds and with favorable road conditions, but don't expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way. 9. For both motorcycles and cars, stopping distance is similar but slippery roads make it tougher for a bike. Allow extra following distance because motorcyclist can't always stop on a dime. 10. Think of a motorcycle in motion as a person, don't think of it as machine. The road is something that must be shared with other drivers. Motorcycles should be fun to ride, not life-threatening. We can avoid more fatalities by consciously sharing the road with motorcyclists.
