Motorcycle Helmet - Why Should I Wear It?
Motorcycle Helmet - Why Should I Wear It? The motorcycle helmet you wear can make a big difference whether or not you will get to your destination safely. Before commencing with any motorcycle trip, a prepared rider will: - Wear a safe motorcycle helmet - Become familiar with how the motorcycle handles - Check the motorcycle parts - Take responsibility. The best motorcycle helmet is the kind that protects you. Not the kind to look fashionable or rich. You have far better chances of surviving a motorcycle accident if you are donning a regulation motorcycle helmet. What is that? --An approved, regulation motorcycle helmet will allow the wearer to have unobstructed peripheral vision. (You can see to the sides as necessary.) -- A good motorcycle helmet meets the Department of Transportation (DOT) and state safety standards. -- The helmet fits snugly, and comfortably, around your head with adequate padding. -- A good motorcycle helmet has no noticeable defects such as cracks, loose padding or frayed straps that can cause faulty protection or distraction. -- A safe motorcycle helmet will have polystyrene form liner, whereas a unsafe helmet just has a small liner at the top. --Helmets meant for motorcycle riding are much stronger than normal helmets, often coming with reinforced rivets. --Look for a motorcycle helmet with a chin strap and face protector. What is a motorcycle face protector? Other than keeping the proper motorcycle helmet on your head, a plastic shatterproof face shield will protect your lovely face in a crash. It will eliminate distractions by wind, insect, rain, rocks and dust as well; helping you focus on the road. Sure, you can get goggles to protect your eyes, but only a shield will protect the entire face. A windshield is a poor substitute for a face shield or goggles; so are sunglasses, possibly blowing off when you turn your head. By the way, never wear tinted motorcycle eyewear when there's little daylight. It is okay to spend a little extra money on a quality motorcycle helmet. Not having a good quality motorcycle helmet can make or break your ride (or break your head). The number one injury among motorcyclists is head and neck injuries; some which could've been caused by a poor motorcycle helmet. And since most motorcycle accidents occur within several miles of starting the ride, just a quick trip to the store still means you wear a proper motorcycle helmet.
